How Vaccination Can Keep You, and Your Community, Healthy

As the colder months approach, respiratory viruses like influenza (the flu) and COVID-19 begin to circulate more widely. Both viruses can cause serious illness, hospitalizations, and long-term complications, especially in older adults, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions.

The good news? You can take proactive steps to protect yourself and your loved ones this season. Annual flu shots and updated COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and essential tools to keep our communities healthy.

Let’s explore why vaccination matters, what’s new this year, and how pharmacists can help you stay protected.

Understanding the Flu and COVID-19

The flu and COVID-19 are contagious respiratory infections caused by different viruses, the influenza virus and the SARS-CoV-2 virus, respectively. Though their symptoms can overlap (fever, cough, fatigue, sore throat), their potential severity and complications vary.

Both can lead to pneumonia, worsen chronic conditions like asthma or heart disease, and result in hospitalization. However, vaccination significantly reduces the risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death from either infection.

Why Get Vaccinated Every Year?

Both flu and COVID-19 viruses change over time. That’s why vaccine formulas are updated annually to match circulating strains and maximize protection.

    •    Flu vaccine: Updated every year to target the most common influenza strains.

    •    COVID-19 vaccine: Adjusted as new variants emerge, ensuring your immune system stays ready.

Even if you had flu or COVID-19 in the past, natural immunity can fade. Getting your annual shots helps “remind” your immune system how to fight these viruses effectively.

What’s New This Year

For the 2025–2026 flu season, Health Canada recommends everyone aged 6 months and older receive their annual flu shot.

The latest COVID-19 booster targets newer Omicron subvariants, providing stronger and longer-lasting protection.

If you’re due for both, you can safely receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same visit, one in each arm. This saves time and ensures you’re protected as early as possible.

Who Benefits Most from Vaccination

While vaccination is recommended for everyone 6 months and older, it’s especially important for:

    •    Adults aged 65 and older

    •    Children under 5 years old

    •    People with chronic conditions (like diabetes, heart, or lung disease)

    •    Pregnant individuals

    •    Healthcare workers and caregivers

    •    People living in long-term care or crowded settings

By getting vaccinated, you also help protect those who are at higher risk but may not respond as well to vaccines, creating community or “herd” protection.

What to Expect After Your Shot

Mild side effects like a sore arm, tiredness, or low-grade fever are common and temporary. These are signs your immune system is building protection.

Serious side effects are rare, and pharmacists are trained to manage them safely. Always let your healthcare provider know if you have a history of severe allergies or past reactions to vaccines.

How to Make Vaccination Easy

You can book your flu and COVID-19 vaccines at your local pharmacy (especially here at Wellcare), and you can sometimes even walk in at some locations. Pharmacists are certified immunizers and can answer your questions about vaccine timing, side effects, and eligibility.

To make it part of your routine:

    •    Aim to get vaccinated in early fall before virus season peaks.

    •    Encourage family members to get their shots together.

    •    Bring your immunization record so your pharmacist can update it.

Protecting Yourself Protects Everyone
